SEMDA Online Workshop: Managing Blood Sugars with Cancer

Diabetes and situational hyperglycemia are common side effects and coexisting conditions in cancer treatment. The complications can be significant and the ongoing role of the RD cannot be emphasized enough. This talk will focus on concerns and solutions in managing elevated blood sugars throughout oncology treatment.
Objectives:
1. Attendees will be able to identify the risk factors for acquiring hyperglycemia in the setting of cancer treatment.
2. Attendees will be able to understand the risks and complications of allowing hyperglycemia to remain untreated during treatment.
3. Attendees will understand the role of the RD in communicating with the team and providing counseling to the patient with hyperglycemia, for both oral nutrition and TF.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Julie Bosworth, RD, LDN Julie is a clinical dietitian who has worked at Dana Farber Cancer Institute for past the ten years, and has a private practice in Hanover for the past three years, Julie Bosworth Nutrition Concepts. Her clinical expertise includes oncology, gastrointestinal disorders, diabetes, renal disease, liver disease, health and survivorship, cardiology, and transplantation. She has worked at a variety of medical institutions including Brigham and Women’s, Mass General, the Faulkner Hospital, University of Maryland Medical Center, and Nestle. In addition, she does home visits for people who are unable to leave their homes. She teaches nutrition to patients, families, dietitians and other medical professionals. Julie’s goal is to teach clinical nutrition using multiple teaching methods in a manner that is translatable to all learning levels and styles. Healthy nutrition practices should feel manageable, stress-free, and affordable. In turn, healthy eating should promote confidence to eat and feel satisfied, well-nourished, with a practical approach in choosing and preparing healthy foods. When teaching, her goal is to provide clear and consistent guidelines to foster compliance in her patients, as well as a mutually understandable nutrition concepts for other health care professionals.
Julie received her Bachelor of Science at Cornell University in Nutritional Sciences, and did her post-baccalaureate internship at Brigham and Women’s/Harvard. She has been practicing nutrition for over twenty years.
