Beyond “Lose Weight and Exercise”: Managing PCOS and Insulin Resistance

  • Event
  • Wednesday, October 07, 2020
Details:

Description: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), the most common cause of ovulatory female infertility, is estimated to affect 6% to 12% of US women of reproductive age, possibly more depending on diagnostic criteria. As a lifelong health condition, PCOS can increase the risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and endometrial cancer far beyond the child-bearing years. This presentation will review the complex health and hormonal effects of PCOS, and how diet, physical activity, targeted supplementation and lifestyle choices can help manage the underlying insulin resistance present in 70% of women with the condition to boost fertility and optimize health. It will also outline the role of the registered dietitian in identifying patients with PCOS, along with proven communication strategies for helping clients understand and manage their condition. Speaker details: Hillary Wright is a registered dietitian with over 30 years of experience as a nutrition educator, writer, speaker and consultant. Hillary holds a bachelor’s degree in Nutrition from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and a Master’s in Health Education from Boston University. Hillary is the Director of Nutrition Counseling for the Domar Center for Mind/Body Health at Boston IVF in Waltham, MA, and is the author of two books, “The PCOS Diet Plan: A Natural Approach to Health for Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome,” and “The Prediabetes Diet Plan: How to Reverse Prediabetes through Healthy Eating and Exercise.” Hillary also works part time as a Senior Nutritionist at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA, is a founding member of the nutrition technology company, Good Measures, LLC.
