Live Virtual Program-Breastfeeding and Human Milk: Recent Research Updates

  • Event
  • Tuesday, February 23, 2021
Details:
Presented by: Donna Chapman, PhD, RD
Date & Time: Tuesday, February 23rd from 5:30-7:30pm via Zoom. A recording will be available.

About the Speaker:
In her 8th grade yearbook, Donna Chapman, PhD, RD wrote that she wanted to become a dietitian. This early insight led her to earn a Bachelor's degree in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Connecticut, complete a dietetic internship at New England Deaconess Hospital, and complete a Master's of Science degree in Clinical Dietetics at Boston University. She began her career as a Neonatal Dietitian at the UConn Health Center, where she later became the Clinical Nutrition Manager. Because she loved the teaching aspects of these positions, she pursued her Ph.D. in Nutritional Sciences at the University of Connecticut. There, under the direction of her mentor, Dr. Rafael Pérez-Escamilla, she learned how exciting and rewarding research could be. She has conducted research at UConn, the Hispanic Health Council in Hartford, the Yale School of Public Health, and Springfield College. Her research primarily focuses on maternal and child nutrition, with an emphasis on evaluating breastfeeding interventions targeting low-income Latinas. She served as the Associate Editor for the Journal of Human Lactation for over 10 years, and is the author of more than 35 peer-reviewed journal articles, and numerous research review columns. For the past 8 years, she has enjoyed serving on the Nutritional Sciences faculty at Springfield College. In her “spare” time, she enjoys spending time with family, cycling, gardening, and exploring new places.

Program Objectives:
Following this WAMDA webinar, participants will be able to:
a. Explain the currently available scientific evidence regarding the safety of breastfeeding during the Covid-19 pandemic
b. Translate research on the maternal and infant benefits of breastfeeding into convincing reasons to promote compliance with current breastfeeding recommendations
c. Use recent research on human milk composition when discussing the benefits of breastfeeding to pregnant and postpartum women
