About the Speaker:
Dr. Janivette Alsina is a general surgeon at Baystate Medical Center. She specializes in Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery as well Surgical Oncology. Dr. Alsina works collaboratively with the clinical nutrition
department and Baystate and serves as the chair of the Nutrition Committee.
Program Objectives:
1. Review the physiology and pathophysiology of the pancreas with respect to patient’s
nutritional needs
2. Classify the various types of pancreatic operations that affect nutrient processing and
absorption
3. Review current recommendations for preoperative nutritional optimization for patients undergoing pancreatic surgery
4. Discuss nutritional state and outcomes in patients undergoing GI surgery
