The health of your patients’ digestive systems is foundational to reaching their health goals, which is why prioritizing gut focused lifestyle changes is crucial. To many patients' surprise, using simple practices to improve the gut, can also improve other symptoms that one would not attribute to gut health.

This seminar will include a basic overview of the digestive system, where things can go awry, what symptoms are commonly associated with gastrointestinal issues, and practical recommendations to help improve function and symptoms.

Recommendations will include behavior change modifications, possible diet interventions and basic supplementation.

Learning Objectives:

1. Have a basic understanding of the function of each organ within the digestive system and where problems could arise

2. Identify symptoms that could be related to poor gut health, including those that are not as obvious

3. Have a basic understanding of how the gut can impact other aspects of health

4. Recognize which interventions to recommend, based on a patient’s presentation and history

Performance Indicators: 8.1.4 Integrates knowledge of macro- and micronutrients for digestion, absorption and metabolism throughout the lifespan in practice. 8.3.6 Keeps abreast of current nutrition and dietetics knowledge and trends. 10.4.4. Makes recommendations for the appropriate use of vitamin and mineral supplementation in the management of health and disease.
